Preserved moss is real, natural moss that has been treated through a glycerin-based preservation process. During this process, the water content inside the plant is replaced with a stabilizing solution that keeps the moss soft, pliable, and vibrant — essentially freezing it in its most beautiful state.

The result is moss that:

• Retains its color and texture indefinitely

• Requires zero water, soil, sunlight, or fertilizer

• Does not grow, spread, or decay under normal indoor conditions

How Is Preserved Moss Art Made?

At Mosstique, every piece starts with hand-selected preserved moss sourced from sustainable suppliers. We work with several varieties depending on the look and texture we're after — cushion moss for that full, pillowy look; reindeer moss for a more feathery, delicate texture; and sheet moss for flat, carpet-like coverage.

Once the moss arrives in our Austin studio, we design each piece from scratch — arranging, layering, and combining moss varieties with dried florals, pressed ferns, and other natural botanicals until the composition feels right. Then each element is hand-glued into place in a solid wood frame.

No two pieces are exactly alike. That's by design. Nature isn't uniform, and neither are we.

How Long Does Preserved Moss Art Last?

This is the question we get most often — and the answer surprises most people.

With proper indoor conditions, preserved moss art lasts 5 to 10+ years without any maintenance whatsoever. The main enemy of preserved moss is prolonged exposure to intense direct sunlight, which will cause fading over time. Keep your piece away from harsh UV exposure and it will hold its color for years.

Beyond that, there's genuinely nothing to do. No misting, no watering, no feeding, no pruning. An occasional gentle dusting is all that's ever needed.

Is Preserved Moss Safe for Pets and Children?

Preserved moss is generally considered non-toxic. The glycerin used in the preservation process is a food-grade substance used widely in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

That said, as with any decorative natural material, we recommend keeping pieces out of reach of very young children and pets who may be tempted to chew or pull at them. Our pieces are decorative objects, not intended for consumption.

Preserved moss walls give you the same visual impact with none of the infrastructure. No irrigation. No lighting requirements. No ongoing maintenance costs. For most commercial and residential applications, preserved moss is the smarter, more practical choice — and over a 5-10 year horizon, significantly more cost-effective.

How Do You Choose the Right Piece?

A few things to consider:

Size — Bigger is almost always better when it comes to moss art. A piece that feels large in the store will feel right at home on a wall. For a standard living room or bedroom wall, we recommend starting at 20×24 inches minimum.
